I understand that getting a new tattoo is a significant decision. It involves a lot of time, effort, and emotion, from choosing an artist to creating a design and actually getting the tattoo. Whether your new tattoo holds deep meaning or is just for fun, it's important for it to age beautifully. However, it can be disheartening when a tattoo that initially looked stunning ends up not looking as great once it's healed. It's tough when good tattoos don't turn out as expected. If you're experiencing this, keep reading to find out what might have gone wrong.  If you still have questions we are a tattoo shop close by Windham & Londonderry located in southern Salem NH

tattoo ink label

Not All Inks Are Created Equal!

We encourage you to ask your artist about the ink they use and to inquire about its certification for sterility and safety standards. You can request confirmation that the ink is certified sterile or adheres to ISO 13485 standards, or at the very least complies with the OSHA Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).  Feel free to discuss these important details with your artist before getting your tattoo.

Mayhem Tattoo Shop, Salem NH purchased a set of ink from World Famous Tattoo Ink.  They are ISO 13485:2016.  All Artists have access to the ink and are encouraged to use it or equal to.

Skin Type Impacts How Your Ink Will Age. Elements such as skin tone and pore size can significantly influence the tattooing process and consequently impact the final outcome. Our experienced artists have worked with a diverse range of skin types, enabling us to provide knowledgeable guidance on suitable shades and styles that will maintain their appeal over time, tailored to the unique characteristics of your skin.

It is important to communicate openly with your artist about any skin conditions.

Example: When healed Psoriasis "skin" is invisible however, tattooing the area will cause and outbreak & could ruin the tattoo.

I understand that caring for a new tattoo can be a concern. If your tattoo isn't looking as vibrant as you'd like, it's important to remember that everyone's healing process is unique. Your skin may still be recovering, and it may just need a little more time and attention. Applying a quality lotion and staying hydrated can make a big difference. If you're still worried after some time has passed, I recommend reaching out to your artist for their advice. At Mayhem Tattoo, we want you to leave our shop with a tattoo you'll love for a lifetime, and we're here to help.

Day You Get Tattooed: How to remove the bandage and clean your tattoo…

  • Remove the bandage GENTLY and immediately take a warm (not hot!) shower.
  • If the bandage feels stuck, let the water run over it, which will make it fall off on its own.
  • Use a liquid soap or body wash (an antibacterial soap that is perfume-free) to wash the tattoo.
  • Gently and thoroughly wash the tattoo. You will want to remove all traces of blood or plasma.  Rinse it fully clean and the let the tattoo air dry.
  • Let your tattoo air dry for 30 minutes before putting on your clothes.

THE NEXT DAY

  • The first day after removing your bandage, you should not need to apply lotion to your new tattoo. Washing it three times a day will provide the moisture that it needs.
  • Allowing it to dry slightly on the first day allows the wound to start to close. Putting moisture on it immediately keeps the wound open and causes it to weep, which could prolong healing or cause it to stick to your clothes.
  • Everyone's skin is different when it comes to moisturization.
  • Even atmospheric moisture can make a difference in how your skin feels.

APPLING SALVE

  • If you choose to apply salve, use a small amount of what your artist suggested
  • The goal is to keep your skin soft, NOT moist—
  • DO NOT re-bandage your tattoo.
  • Wear clean, comfortable clothing. Quality workout wear is acceptable: Restrictive clothing like workout leggings can be a good choice, provided the material is not irritating. Avoid materials that are fuzzy or lacy. We find that synthetic materials like polyester blends are less prone to chafe or stick.

Tattoo shops that have tattoo ink that is not labeled you should question it.

There is a tattoo shop close by that uses home made ink and they are not licensed to make ink.

FIRST 7 DAYS

How to care for your tattoo…

  • Wash your tattoo two to three times a day and apply  Artist suggested lotion AFTER each wash for five to seven days starting 2nd or 3rd day after you remove your bandage. Continue as part of your tattoo aftercare or until your piece has completely peeled.
  • Peeling should start after four to six days.
  • It’s normal to see small surface scabs for up to two weeks.
  • DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH at peeling skin or scabs, as you will lose color and re-open the wound to potential infections (neither of which is the responsibility of your artist!).
  • If your tattoo itches this means it is healing. To relief some of the itching you can gently rub with an ice cube.

SECOND SKIN - PLEASE FOLLOW YOUR ARTIST'S PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

The following is the standard aftercare for Second Skin:

  • Second Skin, and similar products serve as a breathable, waterproof barrier to provide extended protection for new tattoos. Some artists prefer these products, as they can minimize your aftercare steps.
  • If you leave the the artist with Second Skin, leave it in place for 3-5 days. Showers are fine but avoid pools, spas, baths, etc.
  • During this time, you’ll see plasma and excess ink pooling beneath the covering. This is totally normal.
  • Once you remove the Second Skin, follow the above directions to clean and moisturize your tattoo until it is fully healed.
  • If your Second Skin starts to peel off or gets water under it (not plasma/ink), please contact your artist to reapply or to remove.
  •  When to call your artist…
    • Red streaks, increased soreness, puss, bumps, blisters, or foul odor can indicate an infection.
    • If you notice any of these symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.
    • If you have any concerns call us right away.

WHAT TO AVOID WHEN YOU HAVE A FRESH TATTOO

  • Please avoid any activities/environments that could harm your tattoo for the seven-day healing period, including (but not limited to):
    • swimming, immersing your tattoo in water
    • camping, gardening
    • sunning, tanning
    • working out (especially at a public gym!), performing any other strenuous activities.
  • Avoid letting your tattoo come into contact with pets, people, non-sanitary surfaces, dirt, standing water, chemicals, abrasive clothing, and your own unwashed hands.
  • Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight for two weeks after your session. We strongly advise a high SPF sunblock after your tattoo is fully healed to protect premature fading.
